Mix sugar, cinnamon, flour, and salt. Toss with apples. Fill pie shell.
Dot with margarine or butter.
Bake 45-50 minutes, until apples are tender (check with fork). Put foil around edge of crust to keep from burning, if necessary.
After baking, immediately brush with mixture of 1/4 cup light brown sugar, 1 tbsp light cream, and 2 tbsp soft butter.
If desired, garnish with 1/4 cup of walnuts or pecans. Bake for 5 minutes (less or more depending on whether pie is warm), just until mixture melts.
Apple pie may also be served with vanilla ice cream, or a slice of cheddar cheese on top, or in a small puddle of half and half.
The trick to making pie crust is rolling it out between two sheets of wax paper. A perfectly acceptable alternative to homemade pie crust is Pillsbury All-Ready Pie Crust (in a red box in the refrigerator section of the grocery store.)
